“Is the Bible just another good book?”
The Bible is a unique book. There is no other book like it. It is a place
to meet God and relate with Him. It contains answers to life’s questions
and to one’s spiritual search. It provides principles and guidelines
for the living of life. It tells us, like no other book does, that God loves
us, wants a relationship with us, and has provided a way for that to happen.
It is said that the Bible was written by God. How can that be so when it contains
66 different books
written
over a period of some 1500 years by various authors? There are several reasons.
The Bible itself says it was written by God. Over and over one sees the words,
“And the Lord said ...” One verse says that “All Scripture
is inspired by God ...” (1 Timothy 3:16) Jesus quoted passages from
what we now refer to as the Old Testament as God’s word. (E.g., Matt.
4:1-10; 15:6-9) The prophecies of the Old Testament have come true even though
the human writers could not have known what would happen in the future. The
different books of the Bible are consistent one with another - there are no
internal contradictions. All these reasons point to God as the writer of the
Bible, having used human writers through inspiring them in their writing to
pen His words.
So, the simple answer to the question “Is the Bible just another good
book?”
is "No!" And the answer is “No!” because the Bible is
God’s word to mankind. And if the Bible is God’s word, then it
is a book worth paying attention to, because if God is God meaning He knows
everything and is all powerful, perfect and holy, then what He says is true
and it applies to all of us. And if God’s word applies to us, then we
should do what the Bible says, including the part that tells how a person
can have a relationship with God.
Indeed the Bible is more than just another good book; it is the book of life.
No wonder it is and continues to be the best selling book in history. But
the Bible won’t do you any good unless you take it off the shelf and
read it. So enjoy yourself - read that good book, the Bible!
